New Community Garden Unveiled at Liverpool 6 Community Association with Support from The Peel Group Foundation and Peel Waters

An underused outdoor area at Liverpool 6 Community Association (L6) has been transformed into a vibrant new Community Garden, thanks to the support of The Peel Group Foundation and Peel Waters. The new space, named Roots of Resilience, provides a safe, green haven for local children and families, and supports the ongoing work of L6 in tackling poverty and disadvantage in North Liverpool.

The revitalised garden features raised vegetable beds, a flat play area, and space for outdoor learning and gardening—giving young people the opportunity to grow their own food, play, and learn essential life skills in a safe, engaging environment.

The project was supported by The Peel Group Foundation with contractors, SMP Commercial and Demolimiton Ltd, brought in by Peel Waters’ Paul Chappels and Robert Harris, to help design and deliver the vision for the space. The initiative will support L6’s wider mission to improve mental wellbeing, build resilience, and foster a sense of community through hands-on, nature-based learning.

Roots of Resilence

Kate Holland, a member of The Peel Group Foundation Council, said:
“We were compelled to continue our support for this vital charity, which means so much to so many families in the community. The former outdoor space was not fit for purpose—overshadowed by a large tree and unsafe for children. Working alongside our Peel Waters team and contractors, we’ve transformed it into a user-friendly garden where children can grow plants, learn new skills, and enjoy safe play. We are proud to support L6’s inspiring work and look forward to continuing this partnership.”

In addition to supporting the garden, grant funding from The Peel Group Foundation will also help continue the provision of evening sessions for children, where warm meals are provided three times a week. These sessions offer a safe, nurturing environment for up to 40 local children, many of whom rely on L6 as a lifeline for essential support and activities.

The Roots of Resilience garden builds on this previous support and strengthens L6’s ability to provide vital early intervention and long-term community care.

Shirley Marshall, Chief Executive Officer at Liverpool 6 Community Association, said:
“We are delighted to receive continued support from The Peel Group Foundation and grateful to the help the Foundation along with Peel Waters have given in creating this wonderful new outdoor space. The new Community Garden will be life-changing for the young people and families we work with every day. It's more than a garden—it’s a place to grow, learn and connect.”

My girls are delighted with the new garden

One of the parents who frequently attend L6 said'' My girls are delighted with the new garden, they love the mirror selfie wall & how colourful it all is, they have not shut up about planting their own vegetables and I am certain they will have years of fun at L6 and I also love sitting out in the garden watching the world go by ''

Liverpool 6 Community Association has been supporting local families since 2005, offering an open-door policy and a range of vital services including a Foodbank Union, a community laundrette (The John McWash House), and a Baby Bank that provides essential items for new mothers living in deprivation.

L6’s research shows rising concerns about anti-social behaviour, gang culture, and youth safety in the area—driven in part by a lack of local facilities for children and teens. Projects like Roots of Resilience are designed to respond directly to this need, offering meaningful alternatives and positive opportunities for local youth.
